The 2014 Freedom Run for Epilepsy was held on Friday July 4, 2014 at Kailua High School. 600 participants rallied together to increase epilepsy awareness and raised money to continue our fight for seizure freedom. All proceeds collected during the event go towards programs and services of Epilepsy Foundation of Hawaii.

This year we tried something a little different … we challenged participants to create an online fundraising profile to help us raise epilepsy awareness and additional funds for our organization. Samantha Morrell (in honor of her sister Becky), Maureen and Robert Ballard, Lacey Shimabukuro (Team Jax), Achie and Boots Reyes (Team Kalani) helped us raise an additional $2,000!
Here is a message from top fundraiser Samantha Morrell:
“The “unknown” is a complex intangibility. It creates a foundation for predictions and theories, research, curiosity, and fear. We are all here today to support those with a disorder that lives, breathes, and thrives on the unknown. A disorder that leaves even the smartest of the smart questioning it’s origin, motive, and cure.
I lost my older sister Becky to SUDEP [Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy] last august. And beyond all of the unknown that was already faced with this disorder throughout her 32 years, we are now left with broken hearts and a heaping pile of “unknown”. She is my family’s missing piece, and she taught me that we cannot fear the unknown, but face it, fight it, discover it. So thank you from the bottom of my heart for those of you participating, facilitating, volunteering, and donating to a foundation doing just that. There’s a cure and we WILL find it.”
